Outpatient Diabetes Educator: Case Study

" Nursing informatics was created by the merge of three well-established scientific fields: Information science, Computer science and Nursing science " ( Topaz, 2013). With that in mind, while reflecting on my current position of the Outpatient Diabetes Educator, I must admit, we have learned to rely in our practice on computers and became dependent on technology in every aspect of our profession. Let us for one moment entertain the idea of going back in time and imagine nursing care with no additional help from electronics, and we are left with anxiety, disorganization, and ultimately declining patient care.
Therefore, evaluating my job's requirements and meeting needs of adequate patient care, it is easy to assert that technology plays the most significant role in nursing performance. My day would not be efficient if I had no detailed medical patient information or access to necessary blood work and other diagnostic test results along with the ability to review related medical records from various physicians or other facilities. One of the frequent utilization of informatics in my current practice is reviewing remotely my patient's blood sugar logs which ultimately promote adequate insulin titration process and significantly improving patients a1c value. Moreover, this activity makes the patient much engaged in his or her care by downloading blood sugar values

Although, we are thankful for living in the era of vast technology advancement aids in various aspects of the medical field the patient's impression of informatics might be overwhelming and confusing. It is wise to assume that availability of informatics might be beneficial while posing much stress-related to not keeping up with its progress either for a nurse or even more for the
