Preparing for the future is an exciting but complicated experience. I am currently attending Kaplan University as the first step to becoming a dietitian. As a dietitian I may work in a variety of settings, including schools, long term care facilities, hospitals, community/public health facilities, corporate nutrition programs, the food and nutrition industry, sports nutrition or business (My Plan, 2016). After schooling I will have obtained the skills to expertly explain nutrition issues to clients, assess the dietary and health needs of clients, develop meal plans for clients, measure the effects of the meal plans, promote nutrition through public speaking and community outreach programs, and keep up with the latest research …show more content…
I have high social interest, meaning I will like working with others to help them learn and grow. A career in teaching was high on the list and I believe part of being a dietitian is teaching. Other traits that go well in my field are, helping and being of service to people, listening to others, not interrupting, asking good questions and keeping track of how well people are doing in order to make improvements. Problem solving was an important trait because that skill set will help figure a way to best solve the issue in hand. Verbal abilities are also very important; communication is key to success. Different ways of communication are, communicate by speaking, listening and understanding what people say. I graduate from Kaplan University in 2018, following a year of internship. I am giving a grace period to get my affairs together to take my exam, prepare a resume and then off to my first job. I would like to be working in a hospital setting, preferably fast pace. I like to be thrown to the wolves when I start something new, I strive in that sort of environment. I plan to stay several years in a hospital setting saving as much money as possible and then move on to private practice. I do not mind living a very simplistic lifestyle to save for my desired future. I am not saying a private practice will make me rich but it is a little more money and much more flexible hours. To maintain my CDR registration I must renew it every five years and show proof of at least 75 hours of continuing education. I will be required to find continuing education opportunities and track my completed work through the CDR’s Professional Development Portfolio. The Board of Examiners of Dietitians requires that I successfully complete the Texas Jurisprudence Exam every two years for renewal, and it must be completed to renew my license as a dietitian. Renewing the Texas license every 2 years and paying the renewal fee is mandatory (Nutrition ED, 2016). I have a few more years at Kaplan University to prepare myself for each step. I am excited for the opportunity to intern and have hands on experience, preparing myself for my career. Throughout schooling
