As the children grow, their personalities also develop. The development depends on the surrounding they have. Children can achieve ideal emotional development when their parents and professional health care providers give an optimum interaction. The different stages of psychosocial development of a child are infancy, toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. Infancy (Birth to one year). At this age group, babies may learn how to trust people around them especially their parents. Babies’ physical appearance can affect how their parents treat them. Parents’ expectation of having a normal baby is not met. At first, it is hard for them to accept their baby’s condition. Health care providers should also give attention …show more content…
At this age group, children want to do things all by themselves. They want to prove to themselves that they can do things without depending with their parents. The parents’ responsibility is to encourage their children rather than doing things for them. It is important that the parents should not criticize their children after unsuccessful trials have been made. If they are focusing on their children’s ability, it can boost their children’s confidence, willpower, and self-worth. Prosthetists provide different prosthetic designs that are appropriate for their patients. Prosthetists also help their patients to master the standard activities for their age. Struggling to instruct the patient to wear the device is common at this age. There are times that the parents and prosthetist should just stop insisting the patient and just ask again in some other time. Also, the patient at this age has a short attention span. At this stage, they start going to school. It develops their ability to do things constructively. In this age group, children begin to have a group of friends. They will also start noticing the differences they have from others and be conscious about how they look. Their verbal skills also develop making them ask more about their situation. Therefore, children should be included with the conversation to avoid misapprehension about their condition and differences due to their immature way of thinking (Novotny & Swagman, 1992). Middle Childhood (Six to 12 years). This age group pertains to school-age years. Most of the children can now answer their questions by their experience. They can already distinguish the reality from fantasy. Peer groups becoming more important at this age thus, they want to get involved in normal activities of their age group.
