In the book there is numerous time that she talks about religion. Religion is a very strong thing, it can get you through almost anything which is probably how most slaves actually survived. Tom throughout the book is at constant battle with his religion but manages to hold on to it. And no matter how much suffering that he experienced he holds onto his beliefs. Legree was actually scared of Tom’s spiritual power because of how strong it was. One day when the slaves were humming he actually thinks he see a ghost in the fog. And this is when the fear of Tom begins. So the next day out of rage he tries to make Tom bow down to him and ask for his forgiveness, but when Tom denies Legree threaten him. But tom say that he has a vision of eternal life and that legree can not hurt him in anyway. Tom sees a vision of Jesus Christ and even says he talked to him so even when he gets beaten he is filled with the spirit of the lord. The next day Cassy tell Tom she want to kill Legree, but even after everything he has done Tom stay true to his beliefs and tells her not to because it's a sin and convinces her to try to escape instead. This show that even when slaves were treated terrible and abused, that faith kept them from doing bad stuff and helped them kept their moral.
