A. One poem that Edgar Allan Poe wrote that expresses this theme is “The Raven.”
1. In “The Raven” the Narrator has just lost a loved one name, Lenore. However, the narrator goes on to say “Nameless here evermore” (Poe 2764).
a) The narrator is then haunted throughout the entire story that states nevermore.

Another example of this idea can be found in Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
a) The Narrator sees his childhood friend “bore…to the floor a corpse” by his childhood friend’s sister (Poe 2720).
b) The childhood friend of the narrator finally became “a victim to the terrors he had anticipated” (Poe 2720). He had buried his sister alive and tried to carry his life on as if nothing had happened.
c) However, his past soon returned to haunt him when she escaped from the grave and he and she both become corpses
4. The Last example of this theme can be found in Poe’s “The Purloined Letter.”
a) The story starts off with Minister D stealing a letter and replacing it with a fake copy from the Royal Apartments
b) However, to retrieve the letter back to the Royal Apartment Dupin takes the letter from Minister D and replace it with a fake letter.
c) Dupin describes Minister D as being “a desperate man” (Poe 2744).
d) Because of him being a “desperate man” and using people to his advantage (Poe 2744).
e) Minister D past came back to haunt him. The same way he got the letter was the same way he lost the
