America's Dream

Life to all that hate it-
Death to all who love- The New Age now degrades it, to the feather of a dove...
Chokin' on the milk of their dyin' dreams-
Force fed factory byproducts,
`Til we be bustin' at the seams.
Sacred now profane,
Mockin' through Heaven's vain-
America's Dream, is now sour cream-
Which is now poured down the drain...

One of the hallmarks of American culture is its potential for greatness. Such as in Langston Hughes’ poem Let America Be America Again [let it live up to the ideas of the f.f. and become the ideal country it was pictured to be] and Amy Tan’s Two Kinds [even if the greatness isn’t reach it was still there, there was still the potential]. Both the poem and the short story feature a sense of glory that is believed to be attainable. However, in neither narrative is this goal reached. Jing-mei fails the life her mother sets out for her, and in Hughes’ poem, America is still not what it should be.…

We are taken into each chapter with the date and location listed first, establishing part of the setting. The first chapter details the siege underway that has “the Confederate army, under the command of General Robert E. Lee…pinned inside the city [Petersburg, Virginia] for more than 250 days by Union forces under the command of General Ulysses S. Grant” (O’Reilly, Dugard 4). Grant believes that if Lee’s army is allowed to escape south to the Carolinas “a reunified United States of America” (4) will never be realized; “America will continue to be divided into a North and a South, a United States of America and a Confederate States of America” (4). Lee’s men are starving inside the city and getting more desperate by the day so he “plans to…

Economic faltering, civil unrest and protests, threat of terror activity, and other elements seem to make that dream further from reach. In their work “Long Live the American Dream”, Shikha Dalmia states “Americans, hit first by outsourcing and then a recession, are becoming deeply pessimistic about their country’s ability to maintain its economic leadership in a globalized world.” (Dalmia 83). As a nation we are conditioned to equate financial and material abundance as success, so it is no wonder we feel the American dream slipping away during a financial crisis in the country. Dalmia also points out the importance of the country’s overall view of itself it times of crisis: “a sort of cloud habitually covered their features… they were consistently tormented by the vague fear of not having chosen the shortest route that can lead to… their well-being”…

Panning across the rolling hills of meticulous manicured bright green grass. Arriving, finally, to a jovial middle-aged woman placing a fresh and warm apple pie on an open window ledge. This is the facade of the American Dream, complete with adorable Disney cartoon characters. Yet, the reality of the American Dream looks much more like a nightmare, filled with ignorance and hate. A land where citizens achieve ultimate greed by breaking the backs of the less fortunate and using their bones as ladders to ascend to the heaven of…

With this passage, the author superbly illustrates that not only is the American Dream dead, but that many of its most avid followers eventually die with it. Once corrupted, it is nothing more than a false ideal people dedicate their very existences to, only to realise that they could have never truly obtained it. It is the product of the loss of morals of the new, modern world, in which…

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a testament to a string of sickening events that occurred in America during the early 19th century. These repulsive acts were a result of the rise of Industrialization, the massive influx of immigrants making their way from various countries in order to pursue the American Dream. What these immigrants envisioned as the American Dream, was soon to become nothing more than the intoxicating fumes from all the waste set before them. In the course of the novel, Sinclair writes about a wide array of issues occurring at the time, but most importantly his message was to inform the people living in America that these issues were not to be lightly dismissed. One of the most crucial issues presented during the time and…

America: The Fall of a Once Great Nation As United States citizens, students in public schools are required to profess their undying love and loyalty to what politicians want them to believe is the greatest nation in the world. Children are brought up to believe that being an American means being safe when walking the streets, having a house with a picket fence, earning a livable income for one’s family, and the possibility of world peace if all other nations would only listen to the US and their ways as a government. This type of thinking usually continues well into adulthood. Politicians running for President, or more often other political seats, use the American Dream as the lifestyle they will strive toward with their campaign ideas.…
