This man grew up with three brothers in a very poor home, with a controlling father. Langan is a round, dynamic character. Throughout his story which follows from his childhood through adulthood, he grows a lot mentally into a very wise man. Christopher Langan was considered the smartest man in America and was recognized on shows and magazines including a T.V. show called 1 vs. 100. Langan grew up through tough times and encountered many difficulties, but it resulted in him becoming incredibly intelligent. The setting is open ended because there are many stories told throughout the novel that take place all over the world. The setting is used in order to reinforce the the idea of where one grows up can determine success. In some of the stories told by Gladwell the setting is very important, as it plays a role in that character's’ success. In the opening scene of the novel titled The Roseto Mystery the setting plays a major role in the lives of the characters. Gladwell proved that because the Rosetos grew up where they did they became very successful people with few health or social issues. Another example of setting playing an important role in the novel is in the chapter called The 10,000 - Hour Rule.
