Outliers Limitations

Improved Essays
The experiment consisted of numerous limitations and uncontrolled variables which impacted on the validity of the outcome.

The lack of repetition was a major limitation in this experiment. The shortage of repetition forbids the elimination of outliers that may cause inaccuracy in the practical outcome. The lack of repetition in this experiment provided erroneous practical results where experimenters are mislead due to outliers, hence conclusions could not be accurately drawn. According to Table 3, Group Three was a clear outlier when it was the only group which provided a negative result for starch concentration inside the dialysis bag. The existence of an outlier impacts on the credibility of the conclusion made by the experimenters. Hence,

The aim was not met as the results were not valid because of the errors that had occurred during the experiment. The hypothesis stated that the amylase will break down the starch into simple sugars, and it will leave the dialysis tubing into the surrounding water, and that the 25oc cylinders will create better results as the 60oc cylinders will denature the enzyme. The hypothesis was not supported but as the results were not valid, the hypothesis was not refuted either. To determine if the hypothesis was supported or not accurately means that the experiment needs to be done again without errors. The results could not be used as findings as they were not accurate of how amylase performs in the body.…

Yes the hypothesis does support that the murder victim ate at Krogh’s. Yes even though that lipids were tested for negative all the foods contained lipids. It could not be the Sparta Dairy and Anthony Franco’s Pizza because both contained glucose which was tested negative for. It had to be Krogh’s because it contained proteins when Forno Italiano does not. The problems that were countered during the test were when the group tested negative for lipids.…

I got hit with a serious case of déjà vu after reading the Outliers chapter. For a while, I’ve taken interest in watching a documentary series called Air Crash Investigation. Many of the flights described in this chapter had an episode dedicated to their study that I watched several times. After reading the chapter and watching the series, I know that pilots have to be extremely alert when flying an airplane, especially in regard to their word choices. One of the flights described in Outliers, Avianca flight 52, ran out fuel because the flight crew failed to notify the air traffic controllers that they were in a fuel emergency.…

Article B In the article “Breast milk and subsequent intelligence quotient in children born preterm” A. Lucas and R. Morley (1992) conducted a thorough experiment on the effects of mothers’ breast milk on premature newborns. The researchers are not new to this line of work, they conducted another experiment before this one showing a correlation between preterm infants who drank breast milk and better development. In the article I read, the researchers did an exceptional job on perfecting their experiment. They had both dependent and independent variables, and an experimental group and a control group.…

In Outliers, Malcom Gladwell discusses about cultural legacy. He explains that cultural legacy affects the people’s behaviors and toward success. He uses the examples of Harlan, Kentucky people that their cultural legacy led them to behave aggressively. Similarly, in Stand and Deliver, Escalante uses cultural legacies of students to go against their cultural legacy which stops them from being successful by showing the right guidance and support.…

Ethical Concerns Experimental design is a field whereby ethical concerns are almost always a top priority. Although most individuals see ethical norms as common sense, they often vary from culture to culture and there can be discrepancies in the interpretation even by members within a certain cultural group. Furthermore, it is vital to determine any potential ethical concerns contained within an experiment and address those concerns in order to reduce their potential impact on the results. The first potential ethical concern that may be encountered during our experiment is an experimenter either intentionally or accidentally falsifying, fabricating or misrepresenting the data that is collected from the test subjects.…

Growing up, I loved sports, watching, playing, and listening. It didn’t matter how or where, if there was a game on I was most likely watching it. As I grew even older I began to play the sports that I loved so much, football, basketball, and baseball. Being a three sport athlete my entire athletic career, I have seen the benefits that one sport brings to another. It also brings a certain level of sanity being a multi-sport athlete.…

Fermentation is the process of anaerobic respiration of yeasts in the absent of oxygen. The enzymes in the yeast assist the breaking down of the glucose and released alcohol and carbon dioxide. The producing of carbon dioxide means fermentation is taking place. It can be affected by such as temperature and pH level. Some organisms use fermentation to produce ATP without oxygen.…

A notable methodological limitation in this study is sample size. The sample size of six participants in experiment one and two participants in experiment two provided limited data. A second limitation is a narrow participant population in which participants selected were all of the same gender. Because of the small sample size, it is possible that there are confounding…

Validity in Research When planning research, scholars must consider many factors. Two such factors are is the measure of the construct valid and will the specific measure of the construct result in reliable data (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Take for example a study to determine the effectiveness of a specific Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) medication for children ages 8-14 who are diagnosed with ADD, where the researchers yield consistent results for each participant for each dosage for the particular medication, but the participants are only children who do not have ADD. The results may be reliable, meaning the data being collected is consistent, but the research is not valid because the correct participants are not being used. While this…
