It’s Not A Priority
Almost all of our limitations are self-imposed. Don't let your lack of planning, education, environment or connections stop you.

I stumbled onto a new show recently called the West Texas Investors Club. One of the investors is Wayne “Butch” Gilliam is widely known as one of the most reputable pipe salesmen in Permian Basin. He is currently co-owner of Patriot Premium Threading Services.

Gilliam dropped out of high school at 15 to work at his father’s machine shop. He started at the ground floor as a “shop-sweep.” He worked day and night during the oil boom of the 1980’s and was quickly promoted to machinist and later, became president of the company. In the book Outliers, by author Malcolm Gladwell, he writes about his theory that it takes approximately 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery in any field.

Do you already have 10,000 hours of practice? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe you’re working on it. It is easy to break down the math and look at it: 52 weeks a year x 20 hours a week x 10 years = 10,400 hours. Using that formula I have 36,400 hours. Using a full time formula I have over 62K hours. Either way, I’m still practicing. I’m still working every day to improve myself and get it right.

What about you? Where have you logged your hours? Or are you still logging hours of practice? What is it that you do really well? What tasks do you perform so well that people are always asking: How did you do that? This could be your blue flame. Stick with it.

Individual Snowflakes
Snowflakes and people have something in common, we are all unique. My dad would tell me growing up that I looked just like him, two eyes, two ears, a nose, a mouth. That was true. But I’m still unique. There are no two people or snowflakes alike. There are no two me’s or

In this essay I will be explaining my reason for being for this rule and not against. Now to start off this essay I’m going to be explaining why some people will be against me in my claim. Malcolm Gladwell’s goal of his book “Outliers,” is simply to help his audience have a better understanding of what makes people successful. I can see that Gladwell’s points are backed up with examples, evidence, and statistics, which can be very convincing. However, I feel as though Gladwell is somewhat contradictory while trying to achieve his goal. I felt this after reading Chapter 2. In this chapter, Gladwell discusses the idea of hard work and devotion, alluding to the 10,000 rule, using musicians as an prime example.…

This question can be answered using the nonfiction books The Sports Gene by David Epstein, and Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. Both stories revolve around expertise in a certain hobby, and whether or not our choices determine our expertise in that hobby. In Outliers, Gladwell supports that we do have control over what happens in our lives.…

10,000 Hour Argument Practice makes perfect, or so they say, but is that really true? There are conflicting opinions on how much practice it takes to master a skill. In the novel Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell says it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. In the article “Your Genes Don’t Fit: Why 10,000 Hours of Practice Won’t Make You an Expert” the author says that 10,000 hours of practice is not the only thing that it takes to master a skill. I agree with the author who says 10,000 hours of practice is not the only factor to consider when it comes to mastering a skill.…
