Sula Peace, the protagonist, fits the description of “outlaw woman” as used by author Toni Morrison. In this powerful novel, Sula rejects the life Nel, her wonderful friend, embraces. In fact, Sula is portrayed as an unpredictable yet adventurous female. There are numerous stereotypes held about women that exist even in this day and time; for example, one standard image is that women are expected to marry quite young, carry out household chores, and look after children. However, Sula, similar to the outlaw women Toni Morrison describes, lived life by her own rules. When Eva questions Sula about marriage and having babies, Sula exclaims “I don’t want to make somebody else. I want to make myself” (92). Clearly, Sula refuses to settle for
