Air pollution is a mixture of natural and man-made substances in the air we breathe. It can be divided into two main categories: indoor air pollution and outdoor air pollution. Outdoor air pollution takes place outside the natural built environment.
The main types of outdoor pollutions are: Ozone, Particulate matter, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, Sulfate Dioxides, Lead. The health effects are risks associated with outdoor air pollution varies depending on age and previous health/medical issues. The most common health risks and or effects of outdoor air pollution are but not limited to: respiratory effects, cardiovascular effects, stroke and reproductive effects.

Waste dumping played a big role in the environmental problems in Zambia. Environmental problems directly linked with mining operations is that Copperbelt are largely related to geotechnical integrity of waste dumps. Copperbelt is covered with mineral waste and thus represent a “loss of opportunity” for the local population in terms of other land use such as agriculture, forestry, housing, and ranching. The government has put into place a number of regulations to improve and keep the air that the citizen’s breath clean. The government has an Emission Reduction Fund with a target of reducing emission by five percent by the year 2020. Some of the ways that they hope to achieve that is by: repelling carbon monoxide, building solar towns, reducing emission.
