John Locke, a famous French philosopher, believed that people were naturally good, but English philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, believed that humans were evil by nature. Both perspectives have credibility and validity to a certain extent. However, one common trend that can be traced through Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and modern American life is the prevalence of destructives forces such as hysteria, greed, and fear. Human nature can be good or evil based on which side of himself a person decides to work for. Because humans have continued to exhibit their good as well as evil nature one cannot exist without the other.…

In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, the author perfectly portrays the effectiveness of conformity and individualism through the use of the character’s actions and the consequences that those who do not conform face. For instance, the readers are introduced to John Proctor , the poster child in this play for ‘fighting the system’. Miller uses this character primarily, along with stage directions, dialogue, and other characters, to form his idea of conformity and individualism, and how dangerous it is to stand up in a community where everyone seems to be sitting down. In the beginning of the play, John Proctor is introduced as a prideful man who is visibly against the agenda that Reverend Parris is pushing in the church.…

Both main characters in The Crucible and Guilty By Suspicion, John Proctor and David Merrill respectively, have similar character traits. Some obvious similar traits can be seen without much insight into the characters themselves or even deep insight into the plot. Both Proctor and Merrill are middle-aged family men with children and both of their marriages are strained, though due to different circumstances; Proctor had cheated on his wife with Abigail when she was their servant and Merrill was away for months at a time due to the nature of his work as a film director. As one digs under the surface of these men’s lives and looks at the men themselves, it's plain to see that they display similar character traits as well. Both protagonists display a certain righteousness when confronted with the possibility of taking the easy way out of their desperate situations and see through that they do the right, though tough, action.…

Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, is based on the 1692 Salem witch trials and explores the changing power relationships between the characters. To a certain extent, the play explores the idea of characters who were previously powerless, becoming empowered as a result of the trials, however, two more prevalent themes associated with this power related theme were characters losing and abusing power. Abigail and the other young girls who she drags into her story are temporarily empowered throughout the duration of the trials. The idea of loss of power, however, is carried out to a greater degree through the characters of Mr Proctor and others who were accused of witchcraft. Along with this gain in power and loss of power, abuse of power is explored…
