The other day, I found this interesting question as part of a forum, “If everyone is jumping off a bridge, then it is probably for a good reason.” Would you? As an outsider I would not see myself making a line to join the cause. Even if they were jumping for a good reason, I would be searching for a different alternative. In the novel “Out of Your Mind”, writer, Sharon M. Draper, introduces me to Melody, an eleven year old smart girl with cerebral palsy, a disorder that affects a person's ability to move and maintain balance and posture. Melody is not conditional to her disability or to the group society is choosing for her. She is choosing her own path, achieving goals and fighting to bring possibilities to her life. However, for a student who sees her surroundings from a wheelchair, it is a freedom of choice. In “Out of My Mind.” Sharon M. Draper writes,“You are a bird, Melody. And you will fly on Monday when you take the test.” As an outsider, Melody was determined to improve herself. She studied several days and skipped regular activities in order to absorb substantial information to pass the test. She did not get intimidated by hurtful comments or negative opinions coming from others. Melody was persistent and capable of surpassing her limits. She not only participated in the test, but also proved herself that “cerebral palsy limits her body, but not her mind.” (169) In my experience as a Tuluxan 2 outsider, I have learned a new language and put in practice every skill I have acquired from school to my daily activities. For example, I used to be part of the group who waited to get an assistant from an interpreter while doing a personal transaction at school, a dental appointment, or even while buying some electronics.
