A Take on Philosophy
In Out of the Silent Planet we see the bent, the broken, and the bold and how each of them holds a standard on the value of life. The character Weston was a physicist, obsessed with the idea of living forever. Later in the book Oyarsa (a sort of spirit entity) says that Weston has been “bent by the Bent One”. Bent is the Malecandrian word for bad or evil, meaning that in the sense of an allegory Weston had been corrupted by Satan. Satan being “the Bent One”. Weston got together with his colleague Devine to travel to Malecandra, which is Mars, and try to avoid the end of Earth by jumping to another planet. In a way he was trying to outrun destruction and death instead of facing it on his own. Weston had previously been to Malecandra with Devine when we find the beginning of the story. No. Ransom’s only downfall is his fear. The Eldidla (also a Malecandrian species) tried to get him to come and see Oyarsa but he resisted out of fear. When Ransom overheard Weston and Devine discussing their plans for arriving on Malecandra he grabbed a knife to try and find a sense of security and to defend himself from the sorns. As we find out later in the book the sorns are nothing to fear and are actually very friendly. When Ransom finally made the trek to see Oyarsa he was greeted with kindness. As Oyarsa was speaking with Ransom a large group of hrossa came over the river with Weston, Devine, and the three dead hrossa, referenced from earlier. Ransom saw the wonder, kindness, and gentleness of the Malecandrians at that point in the book and was very much over his fear. But, then, when Oyarsa told Ransom he would have to return home with Weston and Devine as a sort of punishment for being afraid. All of his fears came rushing back to
