Today on May 5, 2017 there has been a tragic death that occurred at around 7:30 pm. Joshua Oertel was killed by a drunk driver. Josh was just getting off of work a few hours before this all happened. He went over to his mom's house to say hi then afterwards he went on a walk with his brother. As Josh and his brother were on their walk, that is when Josh got hit by the drunk driver.…
Every city has its dark history. Some have racial tension, others family feuds. Mine has a drinking problem. A teenage drinking problem. In the middle of town is a park, and in that park is a grove of 102 tree stumps.…
When Lady Macbeth kills herself, Macbeth states, "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more" (V.V.19-28). In other words, Macbeth compares his existence to the condition of being a mere ghost. He goes on to compare people to actors who worry about their brief moment in the spotlight only to cease to exist before they realize it is over. The metaphors Shakespeare uses, comparing life to a "walking shadow" and man to "a poor player" emphasize the fleeting nature of life. Shadows are gone as soon as they appear, and actors only assume their character: the people they represent have no true meaning.…
For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…
In the true story, “Night” by Elie Wiesel, a young boy and his family are captured and taken to a concentration camp. Through the pain and agony of losing his mother and sister as well as being transferred from camp to camp, Eliezer slowly loses his faith. Eliezer loses his faith in God, family, and humanity. There are many things that contribute to Eliezer losing his faith. One reason is because he is confused and doesn’t understand why God could let such an awful thing happen to him and to Jewish people.…
The Army behind The Army Although I have never been in the position of needing others’ help, I have seen fellow classmates be there. The Salvation Army started off as a small evangelistic group trying to get relief to others in multiple areas, but it has now become a household name. Some people rely on this special group to get by, while others rely on them during certain times of the year like Christmas and Thanksgiving. People throughout our local area are to account for the help to be able to make this organization do what it needs to for the community. From feeding the homeless and clothing men, women, and children, to helping find shelters and jobs, the Salvation Army has proven to be a national relief center for communities around the world.…
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” said Nelson Mandela one day. But if there is no education how can we change the world? “I can remember opening my eyes in panic, hearing sirens and everybody screaming and crying. Terror in everyone's eyes everywhere I looked, people were running trying to get to their loved ones. I was wearing jeans that had been torn from when I fell, with a t-shirt and running shoes. My face was covered in dirt along with my hair from all the smoke that were being made from the burning houses and building. Then it hit me, i was traveling with my best friend: Sam, before the explosion, I turn in all directions trying to spot him but then when i turn around I hear a gunshot…”…
Homelessness has become an epidemic in America. It is a situation that is dismissed and ignored because people like to blame the homeless for their own dismay. People like to state that homelessness is a result of laziness and all they need to do is get a job. I never had to worry about whether I was going to have food on the table or a place to sleep. I have been fortunate enough to live a life where I have everything I need to live comfortably.…
I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…
To function as a community, people must collaborate and work together. As a member of society, I find it is very important to help the less fortunate in the community and do everything possible to advance ourselves as well as others. The finest citizens in a community value helping others over helping themselves. To me, the National Honor Society is made up of people who share these values with me. My first experience with community service came when I was just at the age of 9.…
Living in the world today, the population rates are constantly rising, and so the world is endlessly being filled with millions and millions of people. Every individual person was born with their own purpose in life. Some individuals discover their purpose early on in life, and others may or may not discover theirs. The Deaf Smith County Crisis Center is a place that advocates for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and anyone else in need. I had the opportunity to complete my ten hours of volunteer work at the Deaf Smith County Crisis Center.…
Two years ago at Santa Ana, I saw a homeless man on a curb next to a parking lot of ABC Supermarket begging for money. I pitied him and reached out 3 dollars in my pocket and gave him my money. He said,“God bless you” and gave me a distinctive smile. I remember to this day, seeing him so happy brought me such joy. The pleasure of helping an unfortunate man felt warming and rewarding.…

Community service is something I have grown up doing. Throughout my life I have volunteered a lot of my time to organizations within my community. I have served at the community soup kitchen, helped young Monett Water Thrasher Swim Team members improve their strokes, and volunteered as a table worker at Monett High School and Monett Youth Club wrestling tournaments. I have always been very involved in helping individuals within my community. I feel as though performing community service as a child and young adult has shaped me into the person I am today.…
