In recent months the U.S. - Mexico border has become under scrutiny, then Presidential Candidate Donald J. Trump announcement that he was going to build a wall along the southern boundary of Mexico and the U.S. to protect Americans from "Some bad Hombres"(Cummings). It's no secret that the Mexican drug cartels are conducting drug and human trafficking into the U.S. via tunnels from one border town into another and in some instances has been known to attempt to bring these items and persons though US Border Patrol controlled entry point. These battles are fought on the streets of Mexico using all types of firearms from 22 mm pistols to high caliber rifles. In June 2011, a congressional report showed that 70% of firearms seized in Mexico and submitted to the ATF for tracing, came from the United States. This report covered 29,284 firearms submitted in 2009 and 2010 (CNN Wire). For this report to be accurate, the Cartels would have to have individuals located in the US purchasing firearms on behalf of them here legally and sending them back into Mexico. On July 11, 2011, the US government announced a plan to require gun dealers in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to report the sales of semiautomatic rifles under certain conditions to stem the flow of guns to Mexican drug cartels (CNN Wire). Supporters of the Wall believe that the wall would allow both the US and Mexico to interdict in this weapons trade and potentially save many Mexican lives in the process (Mortensen). Despite an existing fence in place, the creation of a wall would not completely restrict the flow of drugs and people of illegal status from entering the US, nor would it stop the trafficking of guns from the US into the Mexico.
