For my out of class speech critique, I went to listen to Josh Birnbaum talk about his experiences as photographer for Illinois’ wheelchair basketball team. In his speech, he talked about the struggles that the team faced on the way to reaching their goal of winning a college national championship. Furthermore, Josh documented the lives of the players and showed the audience the struggles they faced every day, but showed us how each of them overcame the obstacles. Additionally, he talked about the life long relationships he made with the player by going out with them and practically being a member of the team. Josh spent hundreds of hours a week with the team during his years at the University of Illinois and told us how that shaped him into the man he is today. …show more content…
iSpeak explains to keep visual aid relevant to the topic and explain each of your visual aids (Nelson, Pearson & Titsworth, 2014). Visuals had a big impact on the speech because that was half of the story that was presented The speaker personally took the pictures for the team and wrote articles about them in the Daily Illini so they were all very relevant to the topic. He created a slideshow of pictures that captured the emotions of every moment that he covered throughout the speech. All of the pictures had a part in telling the story of the journey of this basketball team. Josh used pictures from the games, practices, hotels, bars, and the classrooms. To the naked eye a lot of the pictures would not have much meaning, but the speaker made sure to explain each one and how they played a part in the story he was trying to tell. The most effective part of his speech was the pictures because of the great job he did using them to complement his story. The audience was analyzing the pictures in a way that made them feel like they were living in the moment with the team, which made the speech very effective and
