After apartheid ended, a group of people named the squatters moved into an area where Rohan’s playground use to be and used the parts in order to build homes to live in. “If the squatters moved away, his friends and he could get their territory back.” This shows that Rohan only saw them as a barrier instead of real people. Also he did not see them as people who needed help in order to survive. By the end he had several experiences that showed him that they were actual people that needed help. “He prayed that Cyclone Gloria would keep well away.” This quote shows that by the end he actually cared about the squatters unlike he did in the beginning. He now even sees one of them as a friend. In the beginning of the story it is hard for Rohan to see the squatters as real people because all the people around him sees them as “bugs” and he is currently upset that they just took his play area.
