Control the Game is a technique that explains a way to productively incorporate reading out loud in a classroom. There are many concerns about reading out loud in the classroom. Some teachers are afraid that if the students are always reading than no teaching is happening. They are concerned that if one student is reading, the rest of the students are not. They worry about the self-esteem of students who cannot read out loud well. Despite this possible problems, it is important to have students read out loud because it can improve both their out loud reading skills but also independent reading because it forces them to keep from skipping over words. This will result in the students following along while others read out loud. Teachers should keep the amount of time on student reads “short.” I have put short in quotations because as the class continues, a teacher’s definition of short may as well. If students are not used to reading out loud, they may only be able to do it extremely well for only four or five sentences. After it seems they are losing their enthusiasm, a teacher should switch to another student. As students’ reading skills improve, they will be able to read out loud well for longer lengths of time. It is also important for teachers to keep the identity of the next reader unknown. This is important because if a student knows they will not be asked to read for another page, they may tune the page between the current time and when they read out. They may also practice the part they are supposed to read while the other students are reading their part. If a teacher wants to have as much reading time as possible, they should find ways to keep the transition time between readers as small as
