Out door Farm show Assignment At the farm show I learnt a lot of new information and asked many questions to the organizations involved with the dairy industry. There was so many different things that they all had to offer that could successfully help a farmer with herd management. In the end I believe that DeLaval robotic milking systems newest technology called “Herd Navigator” was what interested me the most. DeLaval’s herd navigator is a state of the art program created so farmers have access to a mini lab right on their farm. No more waiting for DHI to process information or waiting on vet results, every farmer that has this program and is able to test milk samples with no time limitations. Having the robot and herd navigator connected as one makes it so you as the farmer an choose when you want to check on a cow or even have more down time in your busy schedule. The herd navigator tests the milk for three specific things: Reproduction, udder condition and feeding information. The first test focuses on reproduction of the cow, it tests to make sure she is having proper heat cycles, pregnancy, or abortion. To determine this information the lab reads the cows progesterone levels in the milk and sends it to the computer for the farmer to analyze the information within minutes from a computer. Having access to this information there is better management with artificial insemination procedures or if the farmer should contact their veterinarian for further diagnosis.
