In the article “Our Unpaid, Extra Shadow Work”, Craig Lambert the author gives his take on the rising term “shadow work”. According to an Austrian philosopher, Ivan Illich, “shadow work is referred to as unpaid labor.” Craig Lambert states in his article that the self-service checkout line at the grocery store is an example of self-service, as well as pumping your own gas at the gas station. Shadow work is becoming more and more popular as the innovation of technology becomes more advanced. “Robots”, or machines have started taking over our daily lives and we don’t even realize the negativity it is forcing upon us.

There are now webcams, cell phones, Facebook, and many other forms of communication. I have already experienced this in my daily life. You hardly see people talking anymore, just look around when you go to a restaurant or walk around the mall. People are nose deep into their phones and intrigued at all the many forms of social media, or what is happening on the news. We forgot the importance of human interaction, and rely on technology more than anything else. My children will never know a world without phones, computers, or tablets; instead they will only know how to communicate with these things. We as humans need face-to-face interaction with other human beings. Sooner or later people wont know how to start a conversation in person because they were used to talking to each other behind a computer screen or texting on their …show more content…
The downside is that more people are experiencing fatigue for doing more tasks than they are already doing in their daily lives, that was once done by other people not long ago. Adults already have so many responsibilities, like taking care of children, paying bills, working, and many other tasks. Going to the store and bagging your own groceries, or pumping gas shouldn’t be another task when there are willing adults that could be getting paid to help out around America, instead we do everything on our own, lacking the conversation and human contact we could have. Elderly people have definitely seen how much the world has changed since they were young adults, they now have to stand out in the cold and pump their own gas, or find employees at grocery stores and ask them for help when the employee’s should be asking customers if they need assistance. Times have definitely changed and these changes aren’t all
