The Fault in Our Stars, written by John Green, demonstrates the struggles that teenagers with cancer have. Hazel Grace Lancaster, the main protagonist was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer at the age of thirteen. After that, she has been going to community college classes and watching reruns of America’s Next Top Model. Suddenly she chose to attend a support group, mostly because her mother did not want to stay home. She meets two new friends named Augustus and Isaac, who both have/had cancer. When speaking at the funeral, Hazel realized that in order to be happy , you must deal with the current pain. Dealing with a significant amount of pain with the causes being of her boyfriend's death and cancer, Hazel went through a lot in this book.. …show more content…
She and Augustus had much in common, like their opinion on people who try to sympathize, the way people act, how people don’t remember you until you’re gone, etc.. Now that her source of comfort in her opinions, she decided to simply keep to herself. Her number one way to: avoiding the people she knew would make her think of Augustus. The people who pitied her, who tried to feel “sorry” for her, people who felt like they needed to address the obvious and so on. At one point, Hazel mentions that the only person she wanted to talk about Gus’ death is him, who she was able to speak comfortably and loved dearly. Of course, Hazel is going to always remember Augustus, but when she avoided people she knew would frustrate her, this helped her be at a place of tranquility, and helped her gain full closure later …show more content…
She wasn’t as hurt as an average person would. As a matter of fact, Hazel got closure from her to Augustus, and Augustus to her. Hazel and Augustus both knew they were eventually going to die, but she didn’t realize it would be “a month later” soon. Augustus knew his time was coming, so he planned a pre-funeral where Isaac and Hazel were able to tell their eulogies, which was not said at the real funeral, to Augustus himself. This gave closure from Hazel to him by letting him know her thoughts. She got her closure from Augustus after looking for the sequel he was writing of Imperial Affliction for her.
