What A Verse Means To Me Essay

Improved Essays
I 've never understood why people ask what a verse means to me. God does not set out to confuse us, and if the all knowing God wanted to confuse us there would certainly be more efficient ways than to write his sacred book in code. The Bible, then is intentionally written in a way that is understandable to those who know, and seek to know, the God who wrote it. It seems to me that we get so caught up in figuring out our own subjective view on what a given section of scripture says that we all but entirely miss the objective truth that God wrote. In our pursuit of personal revelation, we all too often miss the point of what is being said. In attempt to find what a given verse means "to me" we tend to divorce the passage from its original intent …show more content…
I must live every day in the knowledge that “I am not my own, for I was bought with a price.”(1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV) I must go constantly before God and recognize in humility that all I have and all I am is truly His. That is what it means to offer yourself as a living sacrifice. Just as Abraham offered Isaac on the altar of Mount Moriah (Genesis 22) I must not attempt to hold anything back, but rather trust that God is always faithful to His promises. I must consider myself dead so that the life I live I may live solely in Christ.(Galatians 2:20 ESV) This verse also reveals a glimpse of the process of sanctification that is going on within me and all other disciples of Christ, as the "renewing of our minds" is done as God continues to draw us closer to himself, changing our thoughts and desires from the destructive cravings of sinful flesh to the holy and pure longings of a regenerated spirit and a reborn …show more content…
While I am sure I could think of several moments that I had to choose to sacrifice something I enjoyed for the sake of knowing God more intimately, to view the verse in this light would needlessly limit the scope of Paul 's words. Paul 's letter to the Romans contains within it a complete telling of the Gospel. As such, this passage is at the beginning of Paul 's discourse on how faith in Christ alters everyday life, as can be seen in later verses of chapter 12 speaking about how true Christianity marks its adherents with love, honor, hope, and continual prayer (Romans 12:9-13) In much the same way, the "renewing of our minds" is a ongoing process that marks and separates those who truly seek to know God, and the unregenerate world that has "no fear of God before their eyes" (Psalm 36:1 ESV )This passage applies to every situation I will ever come across, because I must always be offered to God as a pleasing and holy sacrifice. Paul 's command to "no longer conform to the pattern of this world" is not a command that is meant to only be obeyed in certain situations. God desires for us to always be set apart and holy. A counter-cultural fully separated, and holy people is the very people that God has a habit of forming no matter where you look in history, reaching from the Garden of Eden, to the covenant with Abraham, and up to the Azusa St. Revival

The Psalms that I choice to look at for the poetic purposes of this discussion board was Psalms 24. Here in this chapter, we see phrases of true domain from the right about what exactly is the Lords and how what belongs to the Lord also belongs to his followers. Throughout these ten scriptures, we see where the writer establishes that the earth is the Lord no matter what anyone may think and everything in it. The writer also questions the reader as a way of setting them up to learn to true full nature of the Lord. This style of writing, creates a dramatic monologue and creates an anticipation in the mind of the reader to continue to learn about the power of God.…

This applies to society today given that our relationship with God has been misled through the materialistic deception we are subjected to on a daily basis in this capitalistic society, which Paul has already warned us about. Another example is when Paul addresses the divisions between the Jewish and Gentile communities, and how he served as an Apostle who sought to unite both groups. Similarly, we can look at Martin Luther King Jr. and how he utilized God’s word against separatist groups such as the KKK in order to liberate…

Psalm fifty-one corresponds with this passage of scripture. He was saying that he knew God did not delight in sacrifice, but he would bring it if he had to. He knew God did not want this for His life, but he also could not look over the fact that sin has consequences. He knew God still loved him, and he was going to praise God with all he had. God’s concern was not very “legal” but more “personal.”…

Unless the world community can stop finding ways to dither in the face of this monstrous threat to humanity those words Never Again will persist in being one of the most abused phrases in the English language and one of the greatest lies of our time” (Rusesabagina 195). Towards the end of the book, Paul talked about what it feels like to be apart of a group. He said the feeling of freedom and acceptance in a group is addictive because deep inside people are lonely. Once they are in a group, they would do anything to stay and preserve that feeling of being wanted. It is then up to the uninvolved people to be brave and take action.…

In Matthew 13:44-46, it shows that Jesus is worth giving up everything (meaning old habits, bad memories, the things that please you in life, and even physical items) just like Micah did literally. Another one is Matthew 16:25-26 (“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” - Bible Gateway).…

“No one can attain any degree of holiness without God working in his life, but just as surely no one will attain it without effort on his own part” (Bridges 1978). In Jerry Bridges book, The Pursuit of Holiness, Jerry explains how to make a Christian’s life more holy. Through chapter 1, Jerry explains why Christians need holiness in their everyday lives. He explains that to find holiness we must search the Bible because the Bible has all the answers. The Bible is the spoken truth from God.…

The one verse I will forever live by is Psalm 143:8, “Let the morning bring the word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life”. This verse tells me that I do not need to fear about singing in front people, or fear befriending people, or fear leading others, or fear anything in this world because the moment I gave my heart to God, He continually held onto it with such a delicacy. He knows that I trust and have faith in Him, and likewise, I know He trusts and has faith in me. Many people do not think about God having faith and trust in them, but He does.…
