Series: Is our worship Sincere?
Sermon One: Are we just going through the motions?
Sermon Aim: The congregation will come to evaluate themselves in spending time with God.
Mal 1: v1-14

Introduction
Life has it up and down, and sometime we don’t feel like doing what is expected of us. I have to confess. A few years ago, I was in such a position. As a local officer in the corps, I feel like I was going through the motion. Helping people, doing church work and attending worship service that did not energize me anymore. I was tired of going through the motion and feeling a lifeless in my spirit. However, God has a way of intervening; he sent a messenger who helped pull me out of my stagnant state. God did the same to the Jews.

The scripture tells us upon the prophet Malachi 's arrival. He addresses the people of Israel about their skepticism of God’s love for them. The Israelites did not understand the theoretical sensitivity of God’s divine love. “Their response is more specific: “How in what way have you loved us? (NIB, 1996, p. 855). Yes, God’s love is special, personal and has a distinguishing love for his elect. He loves his chosen and us. Unfortunately, many people are skeptical about his love. They use things of the world to measure success. The Israelite assumed that God did not love them, they were incorrect. God loves everyone because he created them in His own image and wants them to worship him …show more content…
While I was waiting to see the doctor, I happen to find a pamphlet that tells the story of a young Christian man who lost both legs in a car accident. The story goes on to say he blames God for a long time for his mishap, and he would still go to church in his wheelchair because he refuses to wear prosthetic legs. He was just going through the motion of worship, until one Sunday morning, 10 years-old little girl got up in church and gave her testimony. She was hit by a drunk driver, and loss her right arm, she stated that God loves her so much that he gave her another year of birthday to spend with her mom and dad. This young girl was the God’s messenger. God always intervenes when you are not looking. Are we rejection God’s distinguishing love when it is looking us in the

Give examples of how the practice of ministry has affected your experience and understanding of A) God At the core of my understanding of God is a God of love in covenantal relationship with God’s children. Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

In the book, A Grace Disguised, by Jerry Sittser, the author shares an emotionally raw account of his personal loss of three family members-his wife, his young daughter, and his mother in a tragic car accident. He takes us through his ability to endure grief and the long journey to forgiveness. Not only must he care for his remaining three children and their emotional wellbeing, he must conquer his own emotions, overcome the overwhelming feeling of loss, and repair his relationship with God. Sittser shows us through his own pain the importance of taking on loss and sorrow head on, that darkness comes with unforgiving and light with forgiveness, and that no one is immune from having hardships brought into their lives. Everyone will suffer from the pain of loss at some point in their lives.…

Have you ever thought about what missionary kids go through? How one day they are “normal” kids and then suddenly they move to a country where they do not know the language? My family and I moved to Portugal in 2008 as missionaries to share the Gospel to the unbelievers. At first I was happy and was still getting over the shock of living in a new country. Then as we started to get into a normal routine and become more comfortable with our surroundings I started to feel very angry.…

Through reading the book, Delighting in the Trinity, I discovered how God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are all connected and how that affects my life today. I learned what God desires for his people and how He wishes for us to live a full and flourishing life. As I continue my journey at Taylor University I see how God wants us to live together in fellowship and love one another with the same love God has for us. Reading Michael Reeves book has helped me see the love God has for me. I often take for granted His love and don’t put much thought into it.…

I love learning new things and so far reading One Way Love by Tullian Tchividjian, grace has been one thing that has been made plain to me. Most of the books I end up reading are extremely challenging and require intense thinking; although, there is nothing wrong with critical thinking, it is relaxing to sit down and feel like you are talking with the author. Something that I have had a tough time understanding is the true meaning of grace. A sentence that stuck out to me is, “Grace is a love that has nothing to do with you, the beloved. It has everything to do with the lover” (OWL pg. 32).…

When it comes to worship there are many questions asked. Do you have to be a good musician, should it come before or after the sermon, is dancing okay, should we have lights, what music is okay, and many other questions. These are all basic questions, but are they the right ones? These are basic questions that are so specific that the real questions that should be asked are not even addressed. I’m not saying that my book lacks trials and tribulations or moments of misery, but on the whole, melancholy moments reside in the minority, not the majority. Now crack the spine of the book.…
