Reflective Essay: Mind Gym

Just two short weeks ago, our local private school association team played against a tough opponent near Birmingham, AL. Since I was not present at the game, I have to go off of the rumors reverberating at supersonic speeds through the thick Alabama haze. Apparently the refs were underqualified for our particular coaching staff and their athletes. What transpired got out of control with multiple personal fouls evidently called against the the wrong side plus parents displaying character that was unbecoming of the school’s core values. The athletes, coaches, and parents were all charged as guilty. No one is immune to such dilemma on the sporting field especially when on the wrong side of the score board. I also concur and enjoyed the discussion of development goals which are at the heart of intrinsic motivation to achieve and be engaged. I have to control my arousal level in class because this stuff excites me. But, I believe the word you were looking for yesterday regarding motivation and engagement was “goal setting”. I don’t know about you, but when I achieve a challenging goal, I’m more motivated to keep reaching higher and with a more intense focus as I engage myself with a more driven passion. Oh my gosh, I’m loving this book, “Mind Gym”. “Goal setting is a master skill for personal growth and peak performance.” I’m thinking “Growth vs Fixed mindsets”. “Without goals, where will you go in life? If you don’t know where you are headed, you’re probably going to end up somewhere other than where you want to be.” “Motivation depends in very large part on goal setting”. “Goals improve performance, quality of practices, clarify expectations, and help increase self-confidence by seeing yourself get better.” “Our goals increase our motivation to achieve.” “A performance goal, or action goal, is something you can control”. I love that sentence. “Focusing on quality at-bats is an action goal. The outcome (a hit) will take care of itself”. I know we don’t like the word control, but what about this regarding SMART goals. “A” stands for achievable. It’s reachable and within your
