Our Lady And Savages Comparison

One of my phrases has to be a picture is worth thousand words. Attending the De Young Museum was phenomenal experience because of the artwork that they showcased ranging from the South America all the way to Africa which shows how diverse they were. However, two images that caught my attention was the Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners and the Savages of the Pacific Ocean. They both contained similarities when it came to the time period known as the neo-classicism while also differences when it comes to the meaning behind the images, and the techniques that the artists used. Even though there were more differences than similarities among the images they both were unique in their own ways. For the first painting known as Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners or in Spanish Nuestra Señora del Refugio de los Pecadores. Unfortunately, for this painting it’s unknown who painted it …show more content…
The Savages of the Pacific Ocean is meant to show what life was like for the pacifiers when the British naval arrived onto their land. He reinforces the notion that the islanders were savages because he would illustrate them with partial clothing. The image also shows this contrast between the wealthy french women vs the inhabitants. Meanwhile, the Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners displays Mary as someone who should be praised and the lady to refuge of our sins. Moreover, there’s also hidden meaning behind the candles. Also, this image is less dramatic than the other because it’s only two individuals painted with black background with them looking into different directions while the other one shows a snippet of the pacifics doing everyday activities. Plus, the Mary image seems more cartoonish vs the other painting that depicts the people more realistic. Overall, there’s more differences than similarities in the image because of the meanings, colors that were used and also how the individuals were

Charles Emile-August Carolus-Duran’s piece titled Portrait of an Artist in her Studio represents the action of a women painting. This piece was made in the late 19th century (c. 1880) and was considered one of Carolus-Duran’s great society portraits. The piece’s present location is the La Salle University Art Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and its original location was *****. This portrait is oil on canvas, and the “quick, loose brushwork” technique can be accredited to masters such as Diego Velasquez and Edouard Manet (placard.) Just as the painting suggests, the painting’s subject is an artist, many say Carolus-Duran’s wife or mistress, in her studio.…

The painter Parmigianino, in his art piece, Madonna with the long neck, captures a fused narrative that comes from another art piece, “Vision of Saint Jerome”. The piece portrays the virgin Mary holding a young baby Christ. The piece is an oil painting that measures 7 by 4 feet, and was created between the years of 1534 through 1540. Unfortunately the piece was never finished because the artist became deceased.…

There is a feeling of connection between the three of them by the way they are all looking at each other and the cross. Although I could find no documentation on this, I feel there is also a symbol of the trinity in the three flowers to Mary's left side. The flowers are very prevalent and are connected to the figures in the painting by having the same color that is in the Virgin's shirt. It is also speculated that the water in the background symbolizes the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. The fact that Mary is barefoot in the painting indicates that she is walking on holy ground.…

They were created in return for a commission by the Fraternity of Immaculate Conception on April 25th, 1483. It is very important for historians to be cautious when they analyze primary sources. It is crucial to review the context carefully in order to try to discover the original meaning and theme of the source. I reviewed three images that were prominent to me and did my best to incorporate the context while analyzing the images. The first image is titled, “A cheife Herowans wife of Pomeoc, and her daughter of the age of 8 or 10 years."…

Everyone sees art from a different point of view, whether if the piece shows someone sitting on a dock looking at the water or just a simple vase of flowers. When comparing two artworks one will find things they like and find things they dislike, that too may be different than what someone else likes and dislikes. Although the artworks may show a similar object, the pieces are still unique since with anything that has similarities, there are also differences present. At the Wichita Art Museum, two paintings of flowers are on display, William J. Glackens’ Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase and Alfred Maurer’s Still Life with Flower. These two artworks show the similarities and differences through the incorporation of line, shape, color, space, balance, and harmony.…

Both paintings have the same subject, virgin Mary with Jesus sitting on the throne. However, they both had a vast amount of differences in the style. Which is shown in the differences of how they painted human figures and the use of space in the painting. Two pieces of art can be from very different time periods and can be created in two different types of styles, but at the same time can be related in many ways. Not only this, but the two pieces may even have different types of subjects and meanings that are being portrayed in the paintings, but they can still be linked together in certain ways. This can be seen with El Greco’s “Burial of Count Orgaz” and Benjamin West’s “The Death of General Wolfe,” in which are from two very different time periods, one relating to that of the Baroque painting style and the other being a neoclassic history painting that derived from the enlightenment. These two paintings are of very different time periods in which “Burial of Count Orgaz” was created in 1586…

When you walk into a church you may realize that there are serval paintings, but what you may have not noticed is their significance. If you look at each painting closely you may notice that they tell a story. The Nativity with the Prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel is a piece of art history which uses iconography and religion to create a narrative. The Nativity is not only a piece of art, but it also is an altarpiece. Since an altar is where offerings for a church are held, the images that appeared on the altarpiece carry the most significance.…

One thing I find similar is that the pictorial conventions of the images all tell a narrative story. Regardless if it’s directed at one person’s autobiography or people as a whole, every picture is worth 1000 words.
