Our identity is based on who we are, who we've been, and who we think we will become. But the past is gone, and the future does not exist yet. Therefore, most of our identity is an illusion, which is easily shattered by major life events. A healthy person is able to create a new illusion read, identity, given some time to sort things out. Our identity is so important because it is who we are and we like to be accepted by the person within. The person we have grown to become the person whom we share with others.
