The culture of a society means the way of living, eating habit, cultural functions, different kinds of festivals, clothes, language, religion, values, policies, tradition etc. It is the complete picture of a nation and the most important and basic concept of sociology. There are some characteristics of culture. Firstly, it must be social and it is developed from the society and social communication. Secondly, all the rules of a culture are not learnt by the people in the society. Some are learned and some are acquired. They have their own language, religion, ways of behavior, ways of speaking and eating, games and sports, dress, music, social and religious values and customs, art and literature. Although they have a rich and traditional culture, it is going under the influence of foreign culture. As a result, the culture of Bangladesh is being adversely affected. Western culture and satellite channels are playing vital role in this regard. Nowadays the young generation of Bangladesh is very fond of western band and pop music, and dresses. They are following western culture in all cases of their life. They do not listen to Palligeeti, Nazrul or Rabindra Sangeet as much as they listen to Western or Hindi music. Besides, they are not so careful of their parents and social restrictions. As a result, our own folk songs, jarigan, sharigan, bhatiali, and kabigan are losing their appeal gradually. Thus, western culture is exercising bad effect on our young generation. Undoubtedly, it is a threat to our cultural identity. We should bear in mind that our traditional music and various folk songs are highly rich in spiritual aspects. So, we must be conscious about our own culture. It is our sacred duty to preserve our own culture from the cultural assault of foreign countries.
