Travel has played an important role in history. The reasons for people to travel throughout history are numerous. Religion, war, and better financial opportunities are just some of the reasons for travel. Individuals who lived before 1500 often spent their entire lives in the same place. This was due to the fact of very little infrastructure for transportation and there usually wasn’t a reason to leave home. The poor would often travel to nearby marketplaces for business and trade. Kidnapped from his native Africa, he was forced into slavery. He worked on a plantation in the Barbados. Eventually, Equiano escapes slavery and moves to London where he publishes an autobiography discussing his experiences in slavery. His book “Interesting Narrative” becomes an instant success in England. The book goes into detail of the abuse and mistreatment slaves encountered on the middle passage. Equiano’s harrowing account of slavery greatly contributed to the abolitionist movement in England. Equiano’s autobiography takes a serious and almost depressing tone as it goes into detail of his capture and arrival on a slave ship. The book also talks about disease, abuse, and torture. Immediately after arriving on the slave ship, Equiano talks about his fear for white people. A white man approaches the chained and terrified Equiano with a glass of liquid asking him to drink. Equiano doesn’t trust the white man and refuses the drink. He only accepts the drink after the white man hands it to a slave who then passes it to Equiano. Equiano goes into great detail of slaves committing suicide by drowning to avoid mistreatment. Those who survived jumping overboard were severely beaten. Equiano even stated if he was given the opportunity to go back home, he’d become a slave again but only if he was in his native home. Ouladah Equiano was a prominent abolitionist who fought for the rights of black slaves who wrote about his travels across the middle passage and work on a plantation in the West Indies. Equiano played a pivotal role not only in abolitionism, but also the life and experiences of freed blacks in England. The effect of Equiano can still be felt in Europe today. Equiano helped to show white Europeans that blacks could be educated and integrate into white society and become productive members of society. He also provided an inspirational image for other slaves once freed to strive for. He was a living example of proving whites wrong. He was an educated function member of society who just happened to be a former slave. Zora Neale Hurston was a prominent writer and activist who helped shed light on the plight of the black person in modern white society through her travels to boarding school and New York city.
