It was a mix of factors of political, personal beliefs, personalities and different upbrings that led them to hate each other. Cope had been born into wealth, while Marsh had not and only gain wealth due to a benefactor early in his life. Marsh was a strong supporter of Charles Darwin's theory of Natural Section and Cope was a firm supporter of Neo-Lamarckism, thus creating much tension between each other with their scientific beliefs.
