Otherworlds In Beowulf

Decent Essays
Otherworlds in modern texts mimic the underworlds of history. Mainly following the idea of Hades underworld, filled with the dead and the lost. Otherworlds in medieval English literature, develop an original take on these mythical, hidden worlds. The representation of the otherworld in Sir Orfeo displays an idealistic realm of beauty and fantasy, with a very dark side that is largely ignored and covered by the beauty of the realm. The otherworld in Beowulf takes on another form. Rather than following the idea of the Greek myth of Hades’ Underworld, the text takes on a Christian dynamic. The idea of Heaven and Hell in Beowulf does not follow the common belief of a Heaven in the sky and a Hell beneath the earth. Rather, Heaven exists in a temple
