William Shakespeare wrote Othello in 1603 to 1604, which is known as the seventeenth century. This play was written as a tragic masterpiece. When William Shakespeare wrote Othello, it aroused the paradoxical blend of discomfort and pleasure in its audience, and has continued to do so for the many years that has past since the play was written. The play contains anecdotes of viewers endeavoring to interpose by furiously disapproving the villain, screaming information to the mislead hero, or even quickening onstage to save the destined heroine, and if such stories disclose a essential mistake of the nature of theatre, they also reveal Shakespeare’s dazzling development of the space between the actors and the viewers. They range in gender and race, but together they form an extremely fascinating story. The characters include: Othello, Brabantio, Cassio, Iago, Roderigo, Duke of Venice, Senators, Montano, Gentlemen of Cyprus, Lodovico, Gratiano, sailors, clowns, Desdemona, Emilia, and Bianca. They true importance of these characters is not their actual names; it is actually the roles they play in the play, Othello. Othello is the main character. He is the Moor, and he is also the general of the Venetian forces. Brabantio is the father of Desdemona, and he is also a Venetian Senator. Cassio is an honorable lieutenant to Othello. Iago is the villain of the story and he is also Othello’s standard-bearer or ensign. Roderigo is a deceived gentleman. Duke of Venice is just a small character, and he has no true meaning. Senators follow what ever Brabantio says. Montano is the Governor of Cyprus. Gentlemen of Cyprus are just supporting characters. Lodovico and Gratiano are two noble Venetians, and they are also kinsmen of Brabantio. Sailors are just more supporting characters. The clown is a humorous character. Desdemona is the wife of Othello. Emilia is the wife of Iago. And Bianca is a …show more content…
Iago deceives Othello throughout the whole play. Iago constantly tells Othello lies about how Cassio and Desdemona are having a secret affair. By stilling Desdemona’s handkerchief Iago finally, successfully convinces Othello of the affair. But all of this nonsense is based off of one main emotion, and that emotion is love. Love is what made Othello feel such strong anger toward Cassio and Desdemona. If Othello had not love Desdemona he would not of cared what she did. The themes that I have listed here are at the bases of everything that has happened in the play, but symbolism play a role as well. There is only one item in the entire play that has a major significance of symbolism. The symbol of the play is the handkerchief. This particular handkerchief represents the love between Othello and Desdemona. Othello gave Desdemona this handkerchief the first time they met, and now it is the thing that causes everything to fall

Tim Blake Nelson’s 2001 “O” is an adaptation and modernization of the play Othello. “O” seems to capture the balance Shakespeare intended between portraying Othello as another, based on his race, and the problem of stereotyping a black character. “Even now, now, very now, an old black ram is tupping your white ewe.” (Act1:1 87-88) Along, with showing how personal motives can depict people who are unsecure about themselves or their relationships. The solution is to have Odin (Othello) question his position in society inwardly while appearing to be a very confident young man on the outside.…
