Throughout literature, villains play prominent roles. Mostly these evil characters serve to enhance and highlight the good in the other characters. The villain that is in the play Othello, written by William Shakespeare, goes by the name of Iago. Othello was written in the early 1600s. The play tells the story of a powerful general of the Venetian army whose marriage is ruined by an envious soldier known as Iago. In the play Iago’s main motive for wanting to destroy Othello is because Iago has been passed over for a promotion which has gone to Cassio. With Iago being betrayed by Othello, Iago feels that revenge is needed. There is multiple and incompatible motives that Iago has towards his hatred for Othello. Around others he is known as loyal
