Fourth century BCE Greek philosopher, Aristotle, has long been revered as the utmost expert on theater. He wrote a book called The Poetics in which, among other things, he listed the six most important elements of a drama (Admin). These elements, plot, character, theme, diction, music, and spectacle, listed in order from most to least important, are still used by playwrights today, as well as by those of Shakespeare’s time (Trumbull). Aristotle’s six elements of drama can be found in all of Shakespeare’s works, including the tragedy, Othello. The first, and most important, element of a drama is plot. Plot refers to the way that events take place on stage. A good plot will have an exposition, clear conflict, climactic event, and resolution

This was further expanded by Aelius Donatus, who named the three divisions protasis, epitasis, and catastrophe. As time has passed, this structure of a drama has been largely replaced by the five-act structure but can still be found in use today. Though less emphasis and attention is placed on Iago and Emilia’s relationship, it is of equal importance as the previous one, contributing to the play while also representing a starkly different marriage. While the formerly mentioned marriage was modern and passionate, the one that Iago and Emilia shared was traditional and unloving. Between them was an empty love, where there is nothing but commitment (Sternberg). However, it was because of this absolute commitment they had for each other that they completely trusted one another. Iago does not hide the fact that he dislikes women and finds many situations in which he can blame or insult them (II.1.115-120).…

When professor mentioned that we would watch and discuss about a Broadway Musical show named ‘Memphis’, the first that came to my mind was, the actual city Memphis in the southern state of Tennessee. I was still confused as to how a city and its activities could be incorporated into a Musical show, which is assumed to be entertaining with melodramatic components, dance and music. I had an assumption that it would be academic, political, boring since it is to be watched in a classroom setting and that a professor would not choose something entertaining or something of the liking of the younger generation. I deduced that this play might touch the topic of race since race defined how a person is treated in most southern states. I assumed that…

Once the councilmen, Desdemona and Othello left the council chamber, Roderigo was quick to confide in me the intricacies of his volatile feelings for the fair Desdemona. Moving out of the councilmen’s earshot, I directed Roderigo away from the chamber and into the epicenter of the city. The sun was setting on the Mediterranean, casting its pink glow on the narrow canals that dissected the Venetian island into small fragments. “What should I do, Iago? I confess that I am ashamed to be so fond of Desdemona, but it is not in my virtue to amend it,” he lamented.…

His tone is rather rash and very demeaning, especially towards his own wife, whom everybody seems to believe is innocent except him and Iago. He calls her a “strumpet” (4.2.81) and a “whore” (4.2.72). She claims ignorance and innocence, but he refuses to believe her. Even when Emilia defends her, Othello is unable to hear any voice of reason. Again, this demonstrates the inferior treatment of the women in the play.…

Marcus Kopp Mr. Vetter AP English Literature October 16, 2015 The setting of Othello is crucial for the reader to better understand when the play is in a state of order or chaos. The play Othello takes place in both Venice, Italy and an island right off of Italy called Cyprus. In Venice, Italy, the play is set to be a city where everything in the play is ordered and when the play is set on the island of Cyprus, it is said that the play is in a chaotic state. William Shakespeare’s 1604 poem “Othello” demonstrates how Shakespeare uses the conventional poetic form to show how the main character, Iago’s villainy and how it enhanced his work.…
