Othello Jealousy Analysis

In the play Othello jealousy demonstrated how an emotion can take over a person controlling them leading them to destruction and chaos in their lives and people around them including close friends and family. Othello also demonstrates how the husband and wife relationship were like in some relationships back then. Society back then was very different compared to today’s society women now are treated much more like human beings and have mostly all the rights men have. Back then in some relationships women were treated like an afterthought like they didn’t even matter in a man’s life men just used them for their personal needs and desires there was no love or affection shown in the relationship from the man. Emilia seems to love Iago as she is always willing to please and satisfy his needs and desires as seen here “I, am glad I have found this napkin this was her first remembrance from the Moor. My wayward husband hath a hundred times wooed me to steal it. But she so loves the token (For he conjured her she should ever keep it) That she reserves it evermore about her to kiss and talk to. I’ll have the work ta’en out and give’t Iago”(Act 3 Sc3). What he will do with it heaven knows not I, I nothing but to please his fantasy. This shows that Emilia does have love for her husband by following his orders to steal the handkerchief even though she does not know why Iago needs it she even steals it knowing she does not want to steal the handkerchief but only does just for her husband. Emilia also shows her love to Iago when Desdemona asks Emilia about her handkerchief. “Where should I lose that handkerchief, Emilia? I know not, madam”(Act 3 Sc4) She simply replies she doesn’t know where it is but yet she is the one which stole the handkerchief for Iago. This indicates her loyalty and love to Iago by keeping the stolen handkerchief away from her hand maiden a very close person to Emilia this ends up betraying Desdemona in the end. Emilia is just trying to keep her husband happy in any way …show more content…
Look you, Cassio and my husband!” (Act 3 Sc4) This is after when Othello kept asking about the handkerchief over and over again to Desdemona. What Emilia is saying is men eat the women like food when they are hungry they just throw it out this indicates that Emilia may love her husband Iago but she really knows what men use women for just for their personal desires. She does not use this metaphor on her husband Iago she instead just follows along her husband’s side if she did she could of maybe figured out what Iago was doing all

She goes from this quiet, obedient ‘wife’ of Iago to a headstrong woman, reflecting the Desdemona of Act I. She provides a feminist voice in Othello, as well as, demonstrating a cynical attitude towards men. We see proof of this on page 78, Act III-Scene IV, lines 116-119: “ 'Tis not a year or two shows us a man. They are all but stomachs, and we all but food; They eat us hungerly, and when they are full, They belch us.” Emilia is very aware of her, and other women’s, place underneath men.…

This is Emilia speaking up for Desdemona to Othello after he had asked her to give him evidence of Desdemona’s unfaithfulness. She fiercely defends her friend even though she does not need to, and chooses to talk back to Othello. When considering their positions in society this would have been seen as very rude and impolite for her to talk to him that way. In Shakespearean times women were not supposed to get defensive or loud about anything, they were supposed to be quiet and obedient. So for Emilia to say these things to any male, much less a male of Othello’s social standing would have been considered unacceptable.…

Even though Iago had been married to Emilia for years, he still shows no connection to his own wife, constantly mocking her and using her for his schemes as well. While Iago simply makes vulgar jokes about women, and calls Emilia a “foolish wife” (3.3.313), Shakespeare uses the affectionate relationship of Desdemona and Othello in contrast to theirs in order to emphasize the fact that Iago never exhibits any affection for her, only criticism. His disconnection is set in stone when in Act V Scene 2, Iago stabs and kills her without a second thought when she gets in his way by revealing his scheme. In contrast, Emilia has always felt a bit of a duty to her husband, saying "I nothing but to please his fantasy," (3.3.310) revealing that she cares for him and thus to her, they were in fact somewhat close, This means there must have been some bonding that was unable to reach Iago, but could in fact affect a sound person. Iago again displays his lack of emotional connection when he cold-bloodedly kills Roderigo.…

Iago expresses his inside thoughts about women as he communicates with Desdemona, “You rise to play and go to bed to work” (Act II.i.121). This quote proves how Iago undergoes sexual insecurity, he does not view women like a normal man would. As he talks to Desdemona, his words seem to correspond to how he views his wife. Emilia must have done something so substandard to Iago that it constantly fuels him with motivation to convey his thoughts about women with no fear. Asha…
