Othello Is A Sympathetic Character Essay

Although some might view Othello to be the villain of the story he remains as a sympathetic character throughout the play. During the play, the audience witnesses Othello being tricked into believing lies. Iago knows Othello is weak and vulnerable so he creates a way for Othello to believe his wife is cheating on him. Othello eventually gets violent with his wife due to his jealously. Othello was so in love with his wife, Desdemona, that the thought of her cheating with another man killed him. Some might wonder who is Othello really? Othello is the play's protagonist and hero. Othello was a Moor, someone who comes from Northern Africa. He is a general in the defense force of the city of Venice. He is highly respected as a general although he is not a native of Venice. Othello gets so jealous and angry with Desdemona, he believes the only way to solve this tragedy is to kill Desdemona. Othello thought by killing her it would stop her from committing the wrongly acts, he was only looking out for her. After the death of Desdemona, Emilia confesses to Othello that it was all Iago’s plan to say Desdemona was cheating when she wasn’t. In act 4 scene 1, Iago is speaking to Othello saying “Her honor is an essence that’s not seen; They have it very oft that have it not, But, for the handkerchief.” In act 4 scene 1 Iago is trying to manipulate Othello into thinking his wife has slept with someone else. This ultimately led to Othello’s change from a rational thinker to a insane jealous fool. Othello was so convinced that Desdemona was cheating on him, that when he finds out Iago created this lie, it crushed Othello.
