Othello Identity Critic Essay

An economic critic might argue othello was set up by Iago up for promotion, but an identity critic might focus more on self identity problems shown within the play. In Othello, Shakespeare makes Othello come off as a good guy, a great warrior and so forth. At the end of the book he was turned into the bad guy for being the cause of death for Desdemona, Iago, and Roderigo. Unsophisticated identity critics might think that Iago Is not telling them something about himself such as his sexuality but a sophisticated identity critic would recognize that Iago is not what he says he is as you can see in this quote (Shakespeare 1.1.6-7). A sophisticated identity critic would read this quote and see that Iago’s sexuality will not change him as a whole, that it will just be changing his sexuality. Othello said “Speak of me as I am”(Shakespeare 5.2.358). This quote means Othello wants people to remember him as he talked about himself not how others talked about him or how they would remember him. A sophisticated identity critic would see this and know there is no identity because Othello wants to be remembered as he talked about himself not how people talked and remembered him. An unsophisticated identity critic would not understand that this shows no identity, one might think that Othello wants to be remembered as he talked about himself and not take identity as part of the understanding.
