Roderigo and Iago wanted to get revenge on Othello. They both united together to take down the great Othello. Rodrigo wanted to get revenge on Othello because Othello has the women of his dreams. Iago also wants revenge on Othello. Othello chose a younger, less experienced soldier named Michael Cassio to be his second commander over Roderigo. Roderigo did not appreciate the fact Othello chose someone over him. Especially someone who was below Roderigo. Jealousy takes a huge role throughout the play. The handkerchief was a very symbolic, historic piece of cloth that meant the world to Othello 's mother. Othello gave it to Desdemona for a symbol of their relationship and love. If Desdemona ever lost it, Othello won 't ever love her again and leave her. Othello 's mother got the handkerchief from a fortune teller. She used it to help control the problems they were having throughout the family. She gave it to Othello to give it to someone who he truly loves and a way to show it. This was a present for Desdemona for when they were ready to get married. It was her first gift ever from Othello. Desdemona valued it.
