He doesn’t truly state as to why he has such hatred towards Othello, but in the readers view, it compels to believe that it is based on what was never given to him. An example of this being; “Though I do hate him as I do hell pains, yet for necessity of present life, I must show out a flag and sign of love – which is indeed but sign.” (i.i.157-160) This being in the beginning of the play, shows that early off Iago’s hatred is based off his jealousy. This is saying that even though he hates Othello, in order to get to the point of influencing Othello’s actions Iago needs to show Othello signs of loyalty and affection – even if it is an act. This power of manipulation that Iago discovers leads him to alternate the other characters thoughts and actions as well, making every action that people are creating to only benefit Iago. He not only convinces the characters to tell lies that they themselves believe is the truth, he is also able to manipulate them to the point of insanity – becoming puppets under his control. The misfortunate events created by Iago built to the point that it could no longer balance and just imploded on itself. The character Iago, lives for drama, constantly thinks he knows best, manipulates and takes everything for granted. All of these qualities are the definition of a toxic friend. A friend that no one deserves, one that no good will come out of the relationship when together. He preys on people’s sense of hope and fidelity, promoting loyalty and delivering treachery in return. A wolf in sheep’s skin, Iago terrifies the modern society because of the ease that he has with his deceitfulness.
