After having his men collect coquina, a shell stone that is soft and hardens with air over a period, they were ready to build the fort since there was enough lime waiting at the site. The construction began on October 2, 1672, to build the Castillo de San Marcos (Fort Marion). This fort was designed to be a square shape and was built on the opposite side of the inlet.
