Oswaldo Guayasamin was born on July 6, 1919 in Ecuador. He had 9 siblings and was the youngest of them all. He didn’t have a good relationship with his father but he loved his mother very much. He had to deal with racism and discrimination and that inspired some of his artwork later in his life. He started school at 12 years old and one of his close friends died that year in the 4 day civil war in Ecuador in 1932. His friend’s died also influence some of his artwork. Guayasamin married at the age of 21 to another artist named Maruja Monteverde and they were married for 15 years. They had 4 children over their marriage, 2 boys and 2 girls.
