Studies have shown that within these interpersonal situations, inclusion greatly increases a person’s self-esteem and in turn makes an individual wish to maintain that level of self-esteem, therefore it is not a surprise that exclusion from interpersonal relationships has a negative effect on a person’s self-esteem. Interestingly, the same effects could be seen within a virtual situation, in Williams, Cheung, and Choi (2000) cyber-ball study to which initially was created to analyses the effects of being ignored over the internet. Their study was conducted by setting up a situation to which people would play a pseudo-multiplayer game and some individuals would be placed under a condition to which computer confederates would completely exclude and individual, while others would be placed within an inclusion condition(Williams et al., 2000).
