These are mainly used in packet-switched communication.
The concept of link-state routing is that the all the routers within the network maintain at -least a partial map of the network topology via the link-state routing protocols. Link State Advertisements (LSA) are flooded through the network in case there is any change in the network. Examples of link state routing protocols are OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) and IS-IS (Intermediate System- Intermediate System).
Advantages:
1) Reliable 2) Easier debugging 3) Less Bandwidth-intensive as compared to Distance-Vector routing protocols
Disadvantages:
1) More computations and complex 2) More memory consumption
Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)
OSPF is a link-state routing protocol which operates within an autonomous system and hence it belongs to the class of interior gateway routing protocols. It was first introduced in the year 1991 by John Moy (RFC 1245). The IPv4 version of OSPF is known as OSPFv2 (RFC 2328). Being a link-state routing protocol, Dijkstra’s Shortest Path First Algorithm (SPF) is used for routing of information.
OSPF uses “area” concept for network scalability supporting classless inter-domain routing. An arbitrary value “cost” is used as a metric by OSPF. In Cisco IOS, bandwidth is used to denote cost (Cisco 7039).The default administrative
