Osmosis is the net movement of water towards higher concentration. In osmosis experiment, water likes to diffuse from an area of low-solute concentration to an area of high-solute concentration. The purpose of the osmosis experiment was to observe the diffusion of solutes and the osmosis of water through a semipermeable membrane, which was dialysis tubing. This experiment was done to examine, if the solution is hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic. The result of this experiment was that tube 5 and 6 decreased in mass. Tube 2, 3 and 4 increased in mass. This is because in the hypertonic solution, water in the tube was flowing outwards, because the concentration of dissolved solutes was greater outside the tube than inside it. This caused the tube to shrink, for example, beaker number 5 and 6 with 40 % sucrose outside and 20% inside the tube. The vacuole was filled with a water solution. Next, students added a drop of 10% NaCl solution on a slide, then again examined the slide and figure out that vacuole of cell got shrunk, because the total solute concentration of the vacuole decreased when 10% NaCl solution was added. The plasma membrane and chloroplast also got shrunk. After that, by cleaning the slide and adding a drop of distilled or deionized water, the cells regained their original appearance and students saw that the space between the chloroplasts and cell wall disappeared.
