Oskar Schindler was born on April 28, 1908 in Svitavy, Moravia. He obtained Czech citizenship when his country of birth became part of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. He was arrested and sentenced to death in 1938 after trying to educate himself about the German military. However, after Sudetenland became part of Germany as part of the Munich Agreement, the Reich pardoned Schindler, who rose through the ranks of the Abwehr. Then, in 1939, Germany invaded Poland, marking the start of World War II. In an attempt to capitalize economically from the war, he left his wife for Krakow, Poland, and became involved in the black market. He began to use his charm to bribe German officers with contraband goods. However, he soon quit this frowned upon practice and and obtained a former Jewish enamelware factory and began making goods for the German military which he named Deutsche Emaillewaren-Fabrik (German Enamelware Factory). Initially, he sold kitchenware to the German army. Schindler started out with a small working force of 45 employees. He soon met a man named Itzhak Stern, a young accountant, who brought Jewish staff to the factory; they were much cheaper to hire. The originally small company grew to have over 1700 people working at it. As the Nazis and Germans began to discriminate against Jews, Schindler began to find more and more reasons to hire them.
