Schindler Oskar Schindler was viewed as a hero to many, but was he a tragic hero? Many people will tell you that he does fall under the tragic hero category. Schindler does have traits that point towards him being a tragic hero, but he was not. Oskar does not have a lot of the key characteristics of being a tragic hero. Tragic heroes tend to bring their own downfalls upon themselves. Oskar was never really "destroyed." He knew from the beginning that his business would not work after the Jews were set free. He was using his business to help others. As much as he wanted to be successful, he knew that saving lives was better and that it would not have continued. Also, Schindler never had a "curse" put on him. The curse always helped with the destruction of the person. Schindler was never punished or destroyed. Oskar may have ran away to South America for a long time. Eventually, he was found and put on trial. He was found to be a not guilty and he was let free. He had no punishment aside from the time he spent in jail before his trial. Many people who argue that Schindler wass a tragic hero will tell you that him having to flee his home country, his marriage failing, and his businesses failing were all apart of his punishment. Schindler, however, was a hero. He helped so many people and so many families survive the war. Many of the Jews were killed off in the war, but Oskar saved thousands. The people he saved carried on their lives. They were able to have families. Those families carried on for generations and are still continuing to grow. Oskar Schindler was never a tragic hero. He was never cursed, he never had a realization moment, and he never had a downfall. This man knew what was going to happen. He put his own life at risk for other people that he did not know.
