Oscar Romero: Who Is The Eucharist?

I chose the quote “When we have mass we ought to go out the way Moses descended Mount Sinai: with his face shining, with his heart brave and strong to face the world’s difficulties”(Sunday Homily, June 17, 1979). This is showing that we should use the Eucharist to get through life’s difficulties. We should try to be as close to God as possible even in very tough moments. This is what Oscar Romero did for his entire life. He used the Eucharist and its characteristics as a guide to do what God would have wanted him to do. The Eucharist symbolizes the sacrifice, communion and presence that all Christians should have in their lives just like Jesus did.

He was showing Christ-like leadership as he was representing Christ in those events which made him become an interpreter for God like Moses was in the quote. This leadership helped to build up the Christian community in El Salvador that preached equality which is what scared the government there as they wanted to have complete control of their citizens. This is why being united with Christ during this time was a very powerful thing and Oscar Romero realized that so he decided that he could use that message to help fix his country.
Romero showed how much he loved and strived to be like God in many different ways that ended up getting him killed. His bravery in crucial times influenced El Salvador’s history. His bravery and strength in a time of many difficulties proved how much he followed the Eucharist. He showed how The Eucharist can be Sacrifice, Communion and Presence all at once through his message of inclusiveness and care for the poor.
