Around the 1970’s, members of the church essentially produced this theology in reaction to the several authoritarian military dictators in Latin America, such as El Salvador. The church was aware of the inequality towards the poor in these Latin American countries. Liberation theology proposes an effort to return to the gospel of the former Catholic Church systems. The members of the church are to return to mimicking the life of Jesus. Archbishop Romero was initially not in favor to this ideology; however, as the film progressed he hastily amended it and constantly advocated for it. Many turning points for Romero as shown in the film, where when the Fathers of the church were taken into custody by the military and were tortured, beaten and even murdered. This is where Romero decided enough was enough and stepped up in becoming a serene figure to a vicious situation. In the film, Romero is seen entering a church that was taken in control by the military to hold a Mass. A crowd entailing of the lower class poor members follows him.
