Beli’s efforts to forget the violence of her early life reflect a greater effort of the Dominican people trying to separate themselves from the Trujillo legacy through forgetting and selective memory. Beli, “Embraced the amnesia that was so common throughout the Islands, five parts denial, five parts negative hallucination” (Diaz 259). As Monica Hanna states, “Forgetting is a seductive prospect when memory seems only to recall pain, but this consistently proves to be a very dangerous choice” (506). Rather than dealing with the pain of a violent past, people choose to forget it and unacknowledged it. Rather than resist, the characters fall victim to the power of fukú.…

There is no such thing as a happy ending. The first and simplest reason being there is no such thing as an ending, as Junot Diaz reminds us with The Watchmen’s Dr. Manhattan’s wise words in The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, “In the end? Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends (Moore).” The second reason being happiness is not a destination no matter how badly we wish it was.…

Blade Runner: Cops and Monsters After thoughtful consideration and research, I can call Blade Runner a [year] masterpiece. The movie definitely sets itself apart from other films of the time not only because of its particular story and eccentric characters, but also because it aligns in its composition two distinctive types of genre, Science Fiction and Film Noir. After watching the movie and discussing it in class, what caught my attention about the film was the fact that its composition and development merges elements from two different genres without complication. In the movie, Ridley Scott introduced visual elements that not only complied with the film noir genre but also embraced the sci-fi field. The fact that the director merged two…

From an outside perspective looking in, others may not value one boy’s problem at an equal value of another boy’s problem, but nonetheless it is a concern each boy has in his own heart that he wants and will solve. In the beginning of the story, Davis makes it clear to the reader that our four main characters are lost and looking for somewhere to belong after various missteps. For Lorenzo, one of the four main boys, this takes the longest amount of time for him to find and accomplish. Ever since a young age, Lorenzo had constantly been bullied for the large bump on his head. Even when he first joins the community formed by the boys, they’re all wary of him: Oscar doesn’t trust him, Cristian thinks he is an idiot, and Luis does not talk to him (Davis 31).…
