Oryx And Crake Book Report

The book Oryx and Crake is a speculative fiction (as described by the author) written by Margaret Atwood, a Canadian author; it was a great success in the year of its publication and was a finalist for multiple awards. The book takes place in a dystopian future where humans have been killed off by a deadly man-made virus, and through a series of flashbacks from the sole survivor readers are told of what had taken place. It transports readers from a post apocalyptic world where a man named Snowman (the remaining human) is living as a protector of a species of bioengineered people -- called the 'children of Crake' or 'Crakers' -- to within his memories of before the epidemic. This book serves as a powerful reminder to its readers that when one is trying to accomplish great things one cannot do it without deception and destruction. Crake in his attempt to create a better world by sacrificing the old became like God when he created the during the days of Noah. He is also like God in the way he made the Crakers, they are made exactly as he wanted them to be just like God wanted humans in his image and made them that way. Snowman is not as ambitious as Crake was and did not do such lofty deeds, rather he plays an important role as a protector, he shields Crakers from a cruel truth and teaches them about the world before they left the laboratory. Just like any prophet, he delivers the message of God, he tells them what Crake wants them to do and learn in order to avoid becoming the foul creatures that humans became in the end.
