Islam and Christianity are both monotheistic, Abrahamic religions, and both involve Jesus Christ, however in Islam He is regarded as simply a prophet, and although Islam agrees he was immaculately conceived, he is not regarded as the son of God (Allah). The main prophet worshipped by Islam is Muhammed, who is believed to have recorded the voice of God in the Islamic Holy Books, the Qur’an and the Hadith. The place of worship for a Muslim is a mosque; Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christians go to a church. Images of God and prophets are allowed by Christianity, but are strictly forbidden in Islam. There are countless differences in practice such as these, it is the fundamental differences that truly set Islam apart from Christianity. For instance, the purpose in life of both religion is to serve God, however the emphasis in Islam leans more toward submission to God. Islam has a greater focus on peace, whereas Christianity leans more toward love, and love of God. Both also believe that it is man’s purpose to spread God’s word, but this duty is far more central to the Muslim belief. In Islam, there is the “home of peace,” which is the home of Islam, and the “house of war,” which is the non-Islamic war. This brings us to the differences between the notions of violence in these two religions. These houses of war and peace are the foundation of Islamic concepts of war and violence - it is the Islamic duty to attempt to create world peace, which can be reached only by converting the entire world to Islam, which in the face of opposition may be accomplished by violence.
